John William ODAM [19 May 1943 - 21 Aug 2022] A steadfast friend, gentle soul, passionate public servant and devoted husband, father and grandfather, John Odam died on August 21 after a long and noble battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was surrounded by his children at his home in Wimberley overlooking the tranquil Blanco River in the same room where his beloved wife, Peggy, passed just five months earlier. Elvis Presley's rendition of "Always on My Mind," Peggy and John's special song, played as John left this world. A proud third-generation Texan, whose fuzzy and hopeful genealogical math sometimes expanded that legacy to five generations, John was born in Abilene, the only child of John Will Odam and Nettie Eloise Odam née Morris. With two working parents, a young John spent many of his days in the loving home of his maternal grandparents, George and Ethel Morris. When not playing games of make believe with friends, practicing piano or helping his father out at the filling station, John retreated to the grand movie houses of Abilene to watch “picture shows.” His almost-70-year love affair with Elvis Presley, whom he would impersonate for decades to come, and a life in politics both blossomed when John lip-synced “Hound Dog” as part of his junior high student council campaign. After graduating as Mr. Abilene High, John, who maintained close relationships with dozens of his classmates until his death, attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, a brotherhood he nurtured until the end of his life. It was at UT where he met the love of his life, Peggy Kurtz, to whom he was married for 56 years. John, who worked at the YMCA in East Austin as a UT student, moved with his new wife to Littleton, Co. following college graduation to run the YMCA before entering Officer Candidate School in the United States Army. Stationed at Fort Knox, he proudly served two years in the Army, teaching tank operations before retiring as a first lieutenant in 1968. John attended Baylor University Law School on the GI Bill and served as editor-in-chief of the law review and graduated with honors. John and Peggy moved to Houston in 1971, and the couple welcomed their first child, Jennifer Paige, into the world in 1972. After a brief stint working for Baker & Botts in Houston, John’s 50-year legal career took off in 1973, when he joined Texas Attorney General John Hill’s office. During his time in the AG’s office, John served as First Assistant Attorney General and argued in front of the United States Supreme Court. While in Austin, John and Peggy grew their family when son Matthew was born in 1975. A return to Houston saw John become a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski, where Colonel Leon Jaworski personally took the Texas State Bar’s 1976 Outstanding Young Lawyer under his wing. Odam divided his time between law and politics starting in the 1980s, when he was elected Chairman of the Harris County Democratic Party, serving from 1982 to 1984. That decade also saw Odam serve as special assistant to Houston mayor Kathy Whitmire and special legislative counsel for Texas Governor Mark White. John’s private practice legal career was marked most notably by his time as partner in the Houston firms of Helm, Pletcher, Hogan, Bown & Saunders, and Beirne, Maynard & Parsons. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Texas Attorney General in 1990, a historic campaign highlighted by his travels to each of the state’s 254 county courthouses, and for United States Senate in 1996. Odam remained an active and optimistic participant in Democratic politics throughout his life, including working as a volunteer with Peggy on Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Odam also served on the Texas Youth Commission, to which he was appointed by Governor Ann Richards. The Abilene native’s life in public service was capped by his work as general counsel in the Harris County Attorney’s Office. In addition to his paid work, Odam volunteered much of his time to his community, serving as a deacon at South Main Baptist Church, on the Houston Parks Board, and as a board member of the Houston Area Parkinson Society. He also found great purpose and camaraderie through his participation in the American Leadership Forum. An avid runner and fixture at Memorial Park throughout the 80s and 90s, Odam, who completed 14 marathons, once held a streak of running at least a mile every day for more than 20 years, a feat commemorated by local TV news in Houston. When he was not running for office or at the park with friends, Odam could often be found reading (or writing) a book. He chronicled his historic courthouse trek around the Lone Star State with his political memoir, “Courtin’ Texas,” and penned the novel “The Candidate Conspiracy,” a globe-hopping 2008 political thriller centered around corrupt foreign influence on U.S. politics. Odam’s love of law, letters, politics, lifelong friends and Elvis always took a back seat to the greatest loves of his life: his wife, children and grandchildren. John was a constantly reliable husband and father whose support for family was unquestioned, and whose pride in his children was shared with everyone in his Rolodex. Family vacations in which John fancied himself a real-life Clark Griswold defined each summer for the Odam family for decades, and holidays spent at first in cabins and later the family home in Wimberley represented some of his warmest memories. Paw Paw was a regular fixture at football games and recitals and regularly shared his love of Texas by taking his grandsons on trips to visit historical sites like the Alamo. John is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Paige Odam Barnett; son, Matthew Kurtz Odam; son-in-law Chip Barnett; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Manieri-Odam; grandchildren Charlie Barnett, Spencer Barnett, Luke Barnett and Rose Manieri-Odam; first cousins Sandra Morrison and Richard Emery; and numerous other cousins. The family would like to thank the loving care and attention of the professionals at Blue Bonnet Palliative Care of Wimberley, Comfort Keepers of San Marcos and Family Tree Private Care of Houston. A celebration of John Odam’s life is planned for 2 p.m. September 3 at South Main Baptist Church in Houston, with a reception at the church to follow. A burial service at the Texas State Cemetery will be planned for the early fall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John Odam’s name to the Houston Area Parkinson Society. Mary Marie "Mimi" Krnavek, at the age 78, leaves behind the love of her life of 59 years, Jimmy, and her four daughters; Jamie and her husband Tommy Daniel, Jay Krnavek, Jody and her husband Robert Cerisano, and Jill and her husband Paul Sellers; her nine grandchildren, Curran, Mason, and Cameron Daniel; Jillian and Devan Letemendia; Ian and Alex Cerisano; Zoe and Von Sellers; her nephew Doug Young and wife Cindy with their two children and grandchildren; Nieces Jeanette and husband Dale Cook; Kay and her husband Ricky Parrish and their children and grandchildren. Mimi now joins her parents, Lawton and Clara May, and sisters, Jerrine and Patty, and brother Freddie in eternal life. Mimi was born in Baird, TX, on November 27th, 1942. After attending Texas Tech for a semester, she quickly realized the love of her life was in Seattle and rushed to join him. After a quick wedding at the courthouse, their amazing love story began and lasted 59 years. The relationship, sacrifice and incredible love they shared created a model for their girls to continue to follow through the rest of their lives. Mimi had four daughters that definitely gave her a run for her money. But as a caring, strong mother, she was always up for the challenge. Mimi was involved in many activities including PTA, director of the drill team, and was the best cheerleader for her daughters at their early morning swim meets. She had a gift of sewing and made many school dance dresses, drill team uniforms, and even a fully-beaded wedding dress. In her later years as a grandmother, Mimi enjoyed attending and rarely missed her grandchildren's sports events. She fancied The Eagles' music, anything sweet, and loved to read in her spare time. Mimi was an excellent player of the traditional Czech game Tarocks, and was the final winner of the long-running Wednesday night Tarocks game with Jimmy, Uncle Larry and Aunt Betty Jo Paar. Mimi was a born historian with a passion for learning, which naturally led her to genealogy. This passion allowed her to trace her family back to the 14th century. Mimi was always there for her family and loved each and every one of them dearly. Her husband, Jimmy, stood by her side and cared for her throughout her entire life. He treated her like a queen and always saw her as the young, strong, West Texas girl that he married 59 years ago. In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored if donations were made in Mary Marie's name to the COPDfoundation.org. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ForestParkEast-FHC.com for the Krnavek family. |

Dr. Nancy Sue SEALE-COLL, DDS (20 Jun 1943 - 14 Apr 2018)
Her distinguished professional life began when she graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX as one of two women in her class of 1970. At the time only one percent of dental students were females. Suzi specialized in Pediatric Dentistry at Baylor, graduating as the first female from the residency in 1972. She taught at the University of Pittsburgh until 1974 when she returned to Baylor to teach in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry until her retirement in March 2017. As Suzi said at her retirement, she walked into the dental school crossing the same street for 51 years. She became chairman of the department of Pediatric Dentistry in 1986. She was the first woman to head a major department in a dental school in the United States. She was named a Regents Professor by Texas A&M Baylor University System in 1997, an honor held by just nine of 5,000 faculty at the time. After her retirement Suzi was awarded Professor Emeritus designation. Suzi's many professional accomplishments spanned more than three decades, including the publication of more than 100 articles and book chapters. She also served as editor-in-chief of the prestigious journal, Pediatric Dentistry, for the past nine years. Among her many honors were Pediatric Dentist of the Year awarded by the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, The Merle Hunter Leadership Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, and the Baylor College of Dentistry Hall of Fame. An Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Dentistry at Baylor was established in her honor in 2012. Suzi's primary research area was tooth pulp therapy, and she spoke frequently both nationally and internationally on the subject. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry presented Suzi and her husband, Jim with the Evidence-Based Dentistry Service Award in 2017 for their systematic review of research in that area. As Suzi's list of achievements accumulated, so did the roll of people who knew, loved and admired her. She kept her childhood and college companions close even as she opened herself to new friends in new places in her adult life. Suzi had a generous spirit, an inquisitive mind and an enthusiasm for even the smallest details of life. She was a gourmet cook, an avid traveler, and a gracious hostess. After her marriage to Jim in 2016, Suzi discovered the joys of vegetable gardening and dug into it with all the ardor of the newly converted. At her retirement celebration in 2017, Suzi looked forward to her new life with Jim, remarking that she would gain an entire family of children, grandchildren and siblings. "It feels like I've spent my whole life at the college," she said. So I leave my Baylor family for my new family. I've got a beautiful life, and I truly saved the best for last." During the past two years, friends from TX to PA indeed agreed that Suzi looked the happiest they'd ever seen her. Family member Peter Grahame remembered Suzi's helpfulness towards others in a life full of purpose. "The bad thing is she's gone, and we can't fix it. Her love is still here though, everywhere, and she lives in the hearts of all she touched," he said. In addition to Jim, Suzi is survived by her stepsons, Shay Coll of York, and Timothy Coll and his wife, Laura Asnaghi, of Baltimore, MD; brother, Henry Seale and partner, Peter Grahame of Albuquerque, NM; sister-in-law, Sherry Marsillo and husband, Lino of Missoula, MT; brother-in-law, George Coll and wife, Jennifer of Loveland, CO; sister-in-law, Susan Frederick and husband, David of Lewes, DE; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and countless friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21 at Saint Patrick's Church, 291 S. Beaver St., York, with a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial. The John W. Keffer Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. is assisting with arrangements. Published in York Daily Record & York Dispatch on Apr. 19, 2018. ------------------------------ To the Baylor College of Dentistry Students, Faculty and Staff, I am very saddened to share with you that a much-loved member of the College of Dentistry family, Dr. Suzi Seale, passed away on Saturday, April 14. Dr. Seale first stepped foot on this campus as a dental student in 1966, and we were fortunate she chose to stay right here at the college for her entire career, which began in 1974 as a faculty member and came to a close just last March 2017 with her retirement. That career spanning more than four decades included a 23-year post as professor and chair of pediatric dentistry. For 17 of those years, she also directed the department’s graduate program, which remains one of the most highly regarded in the country. It’s no coincidence that during her tenure, Dr. Seale was honored as a Regents Professor, Distinguished Alumna, Pediatric Dentist of the Year, College of Dentistry Hall of Fame inductee, president of the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and much more. In ongoing recognition of her service and commitment, Dr. Seale was bestowed the title of Regents Professor Emeritus by Texas A&M University in October 2017. At her core, Dr. Seale possessed an unwavering drive to improve the oral health of children, and in the process, she improved the lives and professional paths of her students and colleagues. Services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at St. Patrick Church, 219 Beaver Street in York, PA. The viewing will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and the funeral mass will begin at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Church Campaign to Restore and Preserve at the address above.
